Promoting Amateur Radio in the High Plains of Texas
W5WX – Amarillo, Texas
W5WX
The Panhandle Amateur Radio Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of the Amateur Radio hobby. Our mission includes education, fellowship with other panhandle operators, emergency preparedness and public service.
Our club is affiliated with the American Radio Relay League, Inc. — ARRL. Many of our members participate in the many exciting contesting opportunities sponsored by ARRL and other special interest groups. Amateur radio offers activities for any interest from CW to voice to digital — the possibilities are endless!
The Panhandle ARC meets the first Saturday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at 1900 Line Ave, Amarillo, TX, 79102. We cordially invite you to attend our meetings and join our club!
Testing for licensing is offered after every regular club meeting. Contact John Laur, Testing Coordinator, for details and requirements. Testing is free and is offered through Laurel VEC.
From Georgia Street, turn east on Plains (the first street south of the old railroad bed). Plains will then become Line Avenue. Look for the antennas 🙂
Am interested in obtaining information about a real life class for license…hopefully a class/test on same day due to two hour drive to Amarillo. Thanks.
Hi Linda – a one day “ham-cram” with test might be possible BUT it would be helpful if you did study online beforehand – that way the class would concentrate on covering any questions you might have about the more technical topics that will be on the exam – HamStudy.org is an excellent free website to prepare – if you email me or Marci KA5IRA directly we might be able to set something up depending on our testing coordinator’s schedule – hope to hear from you soon via email – our email addresses are on the About PARC page 👍🏼
Our next in person class will be April 16th at 09:00 am at the red cross in Amarillo. 1800 s Harrison.
Please study before hand as the class is only one day long.
Would it be possible to send some RF to the west coast?
Need CW on 80, 40, & 15 meters. 10 also, if it opens CW & SSB.
I have a Technician class license and can not operate most of the bands/modes.
Thank you & 73,

I was visiting some other Ham Club sites and wanted to take a moment to give KG5NWD, Melinda a shout out for the fantastic site!
It is definitely a step or 3 above many others.
Hi Donavon – HF or Vhf/Uhf? The club is offering 10 meter radios to Techs to get you going in HF – look up the “new net in town” page for info (https://w5wx.net/2020/10/21/theres-a-new-net-in-town/) – other than that, check out ARRL.org or other ham-related websites for equipment reviews for suggestions – there’s also a 2meter net every morning you can check in to to ask questions about radios, power supplies and antennas- really too many options to list here. The sky is the limit! Hope to see you at a meeting – there a roomful of members who would love to share their experiences 👍🏼
Was wanting to know what would be a good resource to study to obtain a license to operate? Or if there were any opportunities to take a class and test the same day? Please advise if you can. I greatly appreciate it.
I think a favorite around the club is http://www.hamstudy.org – I’ve used it myself and appreciated the “flash card” feature and the different study settings. Our club tests the first Saturday of every month – you’ll have plenty of time to get ready for the Tech exam 👍🏼
Hope that helped!

Melinda, my son-in-law and I am trying to find a class and testing site close to us. The Lubbock area ham group doesn’t have anything right now. Do you have a suggestion for in-real-life class rather than only virtual study?
Hi Tommy,
For your Ham License to get started you will need to take the “Technician License” test. There are great apps and YouTube channels out there to help you study for it and learn how Ham radio works. The book by Gordon West is what most people use to study the test questions. The first place you should look for a manual is the ARRL website. (Www.Arrl.org). If you have questions or need help, please shoot an email to : AreteIsReady@protonmail.com
We are a club that is always ready to help people find their way into the hobby.
